So this is such a simple one but it really does work. When the kids are demanding your full attention, you have a million chores and a work deadline to meet and it all gets too much just stop and breathe.
Breathing exercises are an excellent way of taking five minutes to clear your head, calm down, and direct your focus.
Spending just a few minutes during a stressful day practising a controlled breathing technique can decrease your blood pressure and heart rate and reduce anxiety and stress.
Here are a few breathing exercises for you to try.
This basic technique is easy to learn and is an efficient way of calming you down.
- Sit or lie down in a comfortable position.
- Place one hand on your belly (just below the ribs) and one hand on your chest.
- Inhale through your nose and allow your belly to push your hand out. Your chest should not be moving at all.
- Breathe out with your lips pursed, and make a whistling noise. The hand on your belly should go in. Use this hand to push the air out.
- Repeat this 5 to 10 times. Take your time with each breath.
Alternate Nostril Breathing
Upping the level a little, this technique will relieve stress and help to calm you down in just a few minutes.
- Sit comfortably and make sure your spine is straight.
- Close your eyes.
- Take a deep breath in and out through your nose.
- Close your right nostril with your right thumb.
- Inhale slowly through your left nostril.
- Close the left nostril with your left thumb and hold the breath for a count of 1.
- Open the right nostril and exhale slowly.
- Pause for a count of 1.
- Inhale through the right nostril.
- Hold both nostrils closed for a count of 1.
- Open the left nostril and exhale.
- Repeat for 5 to 10 cycles.
Take A Timeout
As a mom there are going to be times when you want to scream. If you can feel your emotions getting out of control then a mommy time out may be just what you need.
Escaping for a short amount of time, even if it’s just for two minutes will do you the world of good.
Hide in the bathroom, bedroom, or anywhere you can be alone for a minute and take some time to calm down, get your thoughts in order and put everything into perspective.
Don’t Overload Your Schedule

- Start with the easy stuff like your messy drawer in the kitchen and the cupboard under the stairs.
- Declutter one room at a time.
- Sort through everything.
- Keep only what you need.
